If you spend any amount of time on the Internet, on dating sites, reading the horoscope section in newspapers (remember those?) or doing any of the many activities that involve the zodiac, chances are you’ve heard about star signs.
Leo, Aries, Capricorn, Aquarius—these are all pretty well-known signs. Even if you don’t know the first thing about the zodiac, chances are you’ve heard of them, and maybe a few others. But what are they where do they come from, and what do people mean when they say signs are compatible or not? Let’s take a look.
Zodiac Star Signs
For starters, it’s important to note that while we talk about the Western zodiac when we generally talk about astrology and star signs, there are in fact plenty of other kinds of astrological systems out there.
China, India, ancient Babylon, various Native American tribes—there have been many different star signs and systems. That’s definitely something to consider when thinking about star signs in general and what significance you ascribe to them in particular.
Star Signs in Order
Regardless, the Western zodiac is incredibly popular and influential today. Its roots in Ancient Greece, and is a set of 12 different symbols which correspond to classical notions of the cosmos. Those 12 symbols correspond to roughly one month each, following notions of solar and lunar cycles.
Star Signs Dates
The date on which you are born corresponds to one of the 12 month-long zodiac signs, with most dates on which the signs are noted falling in the 20s (that is, Scorpio birth dates span October 23rd to November 21st, Sagittarius from November 22nd to December 21st, etc.)
Compatible Star Signs
Each sign has specific attributes assigned to it, and so the date and attributes assigned to you by your star signs are then used to determine compatibility in a zodiac sense.
